One of the major efforts on the Westcoast during World War II was the development of shipyards and the production of warships, Coastal Vessels and merchant ships from these yards. The west coast provided a relatively safe area for production, a secured source of required resources, a ready, experienced and willing workforce, and a motivated government ready to support the building programs. Although not all the ships were built during the 1939 - 1945 period and many of the ships built were almost immediately sent off to fight in other theatres (mainly the Atlantic), this was a golden age of shipbuilding on the west coast.
